Family Based Therapy
CBT–E
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
for Eating Disorders
Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT-E) is one of the leading evidence based treatments for eating disorders in adults. A version of the treatment is available for young people. CBT-E is about understanding the interaction between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It is a highly individualised treatment that focuses on the factors that maintain the eating disorder.
SSCM
Specialist Supportive
Clinical Management
Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM) is an effective treatment for anorexia nervosa. SSCM allows for broader life issues, client goals and eating disorder behaviours to be addressed. SSCM combines two therapeutic components, clinical management and supportive psychotherapy.
The Body Project.
The body project is a group based intervention that provides a safe space for adolescents and young adults to confront unrealistic appearance ideals and develop healthy body image and self esteem. Studies have repeatedly found the body project to be effective in reducing body dissatisfaction , negative mood, unhealthy dieting and disordered eating.
Approximately one million Australians are living with an eating disorder in any given year. The trend of disordered eating in children and adolescents has been called disturbing with rates as high as 22%. Girls are 75% more likely to be impacted than boys. Numerous studies have linked exposure to the prevalent “appearance or thin beauty ideal” in mass and social media to body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. Research has shown when women and girls talk about the appearance-ideal portrayed in the media and discuss how to challenge pressures to conform to these pressures it makes them feel better about their bodies.
The body project is a 4-week group program for adolescents and young adults and aims to:
Reduce the pursuit of the “appearance or thin beauty ideal”
Promote body acceptance
Reduce current eating disorder symptoms
Prevent eating disorders
